About Us

Vision

People making lasting change in the place that they live.

Mission

We help people start small, find what already works, and share what they learn, so local change can grow and last.

What we are

No Where Else Society (NWESoc) is a group of local people helping their own community through small projects. We meet, share ideas, pick something small to try, and look for what’s already working nearby. Then we write down what we learned so others can copy it.

Why the name

The best place to start making a change is right where you are.

Why the compass

Our logo is a compass. The four points spell N, W, E, S, and the S also stands for Soc, which gives us NWESoc. The four arrows all point to the dot in the middle. That dot is you. That’s why we say “you are here”.

Who it’s for

Anyone who lives, works or spends time in the area. No experience needed. No membership fee. All welcome.

Five simple ideas

These five ideas guide everything we do.

You are here.

Start where you stand. The community that needs help is the one around you, and you are already part of it. No one is coming to fix it, and no one needs to give you permission. Begin with your own street, suburb or neighbourhood.

Start small.

Try something, see what happens, adjust. Pick one thing you can do in a few weeks, try it, then notice what worked and what didn’t. Nobody has to get it right the first time.

Find first.

Someone may already be solving it. Before building something new, look for what already works and who is already doing it. Back them, join them, or connect others to them.

Everyone joins in.

Share the work, share the credit. No spectators and no stars. When a group reaches 8 to 10 people, it splits into two so everyone is still heard.

Pass it on.

Leave things a little better than you found them, write down how you did it, and let others copy it. Change a street, and you can change a suburb.

Where this is going

Right now, this is a trial in Devonport, Tasmania. We’re testing, learning and improving. If it works, we hope it can spread to other places. In the future it may become a co-op, owned and run by its members. Nothing is fixed yet, and we want your ideas.

What we want to learn

  • Do people come along?
  • Which small projects do they choose?
  • What helps groups keep going?
  • Can another city copy this easily?

Our promise:

We will tell you what works and what doesn’t.
